Behind Closed Doors: The Church and Domestic Abuse in Christian Homes – Webinar

November 17, 2021 @ 10:00 am - 11:30 am

November is Domestic Violence Awareness month; a time to raise awareness that domestic violence impacts millions of people. It’s a problem across every gender, status, culture, religion and race – and it’s one we all have a part in addressing.

This November, MCC Manitoba will be hosting a two-part webinar series especially for faith leaders – to offer insight into domestic violence in Christian contexts and engagement with biblical texts that function to heal rather than harm.

Behind Closed Doors: The Church and Domestic Abuse in Christian Homes

The reality of domestic abuse in Christian homes is a complex and multi-faceted problem that is frequently hidden behind closed doors. This webinar looks at prevalence rates, contributing factors, social and psychological consequences, and the conundrums faced by pastors responding to domestic abuse among their congregants

Presented by: Val Hiebert – Abuse Response & Prevention, MCC Manitoba

As Abuse Response & Prevention Assistant Coordinator, Val Hiebert, together with Jaymie Friesen, raises awareness, teaching workshops and seminars relating to healthy relationships within churches and families. In addition to this she conducts various types of domestic abuse related research. She is also Assistant Professor of Sociology at Providence University College, where she has taught about gender, children & violence, language & culture, cultural anthropology, and marriage & family for the past 20 years. Val enjoys bringing her academic learnings into community contexts, for awareness, advocacy and conversation
